Description
Method: This stranded colorwork hat is knit in the round from the brim up. Featuring a cute tonttu and motifs based on traditional Finnish patterns, it can be worked in three or more contrasting colors and topped off with a fluffy pompom.
The colorwork in this design is both charted and written out, you do not have to be comfortable reading charts to enjoy knitting this hat!
Size: This pattern is written in 5 sizes. All instructions that differ depending on the size you are knitting are indicated with parentheses and color coded like this: XS (S, M, L, XL).
Sizing has 1.5” – 2.5” (3.75 – 6 cm) of negative ease built in, so choose a size 1.5” – 2.5” (3.75 – 6 cm) smaller than the head circumference of the intended wearer.
Size | Finished Hat Circumference | Suggested Age | |
XS | 17.25” | 44 cm | Child |
S | 18.5” | 47 cm | Teen/ Women’s S |
M | 19⅝” | 50 cm | Women’s M/ Men’s S |
L | 21” | 53cm | Women’s L/ Men’s M |
XL | 22¾” | 58cm | Men’s L |
Yarn: This pattern works well with three (or more) solid colors of DK yarn. You can use any DK yarn that you like and with which you can get tension/ gauge.
Please note I do not recommend using yarns with a high cotton content as cotton doesn’t stretch as much as other fibers and this will affect the fit of your hat.
This is a great pattern to experiment with color and use mini skeins or any leftovers lurking in your stash. Be creative, have fun, but keep in mind changes will affect yardage and number of ends to weave in. The amounts of each color required will depend on how many colors you pick, where you choose to use them in the hat, and which size you are knitting. As a guide for the hat pictured (size M in three colors) I used the following quantities of Cygnet Pure Wool Superwash DK:
MC – 208 White approx. 65 metres (71 yards)
CC1 – 2150 Tartan Green approx. 50 metres (55 yards)
CC2 – 2185 Geranium approx. 45 metres (49 yards)
Gauge: 6.5 stitches and 7 rows per inch (2.5cm) over colorwork pattern.
Needles:
3.75mm dpns, long circular for magic loop, or short circular (in which case you will still need dpns to work the crown decreases) or size needed for gauge
3.25mm dpns, long circular for magic loop, or short circular for knitting brim.
Other Materials Required:
Stitch Markers
Pompom
Small button (if attaching pompom with elastic loop)
Tape Measure
Scissors
Darning needle for sewing in ends
