The Jussi Tonttu Socks: Inspired by Scandinavian folklore in which the tonttu was believed to live in the nearby forests; he would protect the farmstead, its’ family and animals when treated with respect – offend him or misbehave and you would be punished! To thank him for his year-round protection it was customary on Christmas Eve to leave him out a bowl of porridge topped with a generous knob of butter (look for this hidden under the heel of your sock!). When he first hopped off my needles, I asked my Finnish cousin to suggest a traditional name. Jussi is Finnish for John and, as it is pronounced “you-see”, it seemed the perfect name – “you-see tonttu”!
The colorwork in this design is both charted and written out, you do not have to be comfortable reading charts to enjoy knitting these socks!

The Johanna Tonttu Socks: Spring has sprung and Johanna Tonttu is busy in her garden! The dark cold days of winter are behind her, and she is ready to enjoy all the bright colors her garden will bring forth over the coming season. Surrounded by her beloved flowers and with the birds singing in the branches above she is a happy little creature. As she grew on my needles, I asked my Finnish cousin to suggest a traditional name for her. We decided on Johanna to honor our ancestor who was probably no stranger to knitting socks and working in her garden.

The Thorfinn Tonttu Socks: Thorfinn Tonttu is restless; not content to stay at home protecting the farmstead like his parents Jussi and Johanna he feels the call of the sea. He has decided to join a Viking expedition and see the world beyond his shores. Where will he end up? He doesn’t know, but he is dreaming of new lands to explore! Twisted cable ribbing representing the ropes of the longships sits above a knotwork motif representing shields and oars. Thorfinn Tonttu stands at the water’s edge waiting to embark on his adventure while noisy gulls circle the skies above the longships.
