The Draig-dan Socks: This is the first of four dragon sock designs I will be releasing; all of them have a Celtic flavor as I have loved Celtic art for almost as long as I have loved dragons! The Celtic connection continues with the name I have chosen for this pair – Draig-dân is Welsh for Fire Dragon.
Method: The start of the round is placed at the back of the leg and the center of the sole to enable the pattern to flow around your foot with as little visual interruption as possible. There is an accompanying photo tutorial to aid in correct placement of the heel. The gusset decreases are placed on the sole.
Please note the colorwork design in this pattern is charted not written out. You need to be prepared to read and work from charts in order to enjoy knitting this design.
Size: This pattern is written in 3 sizes referred to throughout the pattern as S, M, and L. All instructions that differ depending on the size you are knitting are color coded.

Size Sock Circumference Approx. UK Sizes
S 7” 18 cm Children’s 13-4, Ladies 1-4
M 8”” 20.5 cm Ladies 5-8
L 9 1/4” 23.5 cm Men’s 9-11

Yarn: The amounts of each color required will depend on how many colors you pick and where you choose to use them in the sock. As a guide:
Size M in two colors (pair pictured)
MC – West Yorkshire Spinners Signature 4 Ply in Cardamom approx. 210m (230 yards)
CC1 – Schoppel-Wolle Zauberball in Fuschienbeet approx.125m (137 yards)

The Dragain Mara socks: The second of my four Celtic dragon sock designs, and the name means “dragons of the sea” in Scottish Gaelic. Legend has it that these dragons live together in underwater caverns far below the waves and are deeply devoted to each other. Although they can live on land and even fly when they wish, they don’t come to the surface very often and are happiest swimming and playing in their watery home. This, combined with their more wary nature, is why humans are less acquainted with them than their larger freshwater dwelling cousins such as Nessie and Ogopogo.
Method: Featuring twisted cable ribbing, a modified Eye of Partridge heel flap, and gusset decreases placed on the sole. The start of the round is placed at the back of the leg and the center of the sole to enable the pattern to flow around your foot with as little visual interruption as possible. There is an accompanying photo tutorial to aid in correct placement of the heel.
The colorwork design in this pattern is both charted and written out. You do not need to be comfortable working from charts in order to enjoy knitting this design! This pattern contains two pdfs. The written instructions for the colorwork are in a separate pdf named “Dragain Mara Socks Chart Alternative”, you will need this pdf and the main pdf if you do not want to work from the charts.
Size: This pattern is written in 2 sizes referred to throughout the pattern as M, and L. All instructions that differ depending on the size you are knitting are color coded.

Size Sock Circumference Approx. UK Sizes

L 9” 23 cm Men’s 9-11

Yarn: The amounts of each color required will depend on how many colors you pick and where you choose to use them in the sock. As a guide:
Size M in three colors (pair pictured)
MC – West Yorkshire Spinners Signature 4 Ply in Spearmint approx. 160m (175 yards)

CC2 – Schoppel-Wolle Zauberball Crazy in Kleiner Fuchs approx. 140m (153 yards)

The Dragain Ceangailte socks: The third of my Celtic Dragon designs, Dragain Ceangailte means “entwined dragons” in Scottish Gaelic. This design was inspired by the Celtic knotwork found in carved panels and illuminated manuscript borders. The twists and turns of these patterns fascinated me as a youngster, and I still love tracing their paths and working out how they connect!
Method: This pattern contains the option to customise the depth of the gusset to enable you to knit socks for a greater range of foot shapes (i.e., high or low insteps, high arches, fallen arches/flat feet.). The pattern also contains instructions for altering the length of both the leg and the foot making it highly customisable despite the all over colorwork pattern!
There are five pdfs, the main pdf, a pdf with written instructions on customising your gusset, and three pdfs of additional charts (one for each size).
Please note the colorwork design in this pattern is charted not written out. You need to be prepared to read and work from charts in order to enjoy knitting this design.

Yarn: The amounts of each color required will depend on how many colors you pick and where you choose to use them in the sock. As a guide:
Size M in two colors (pair pictured)
MC – West Yorkshire Spinners Signature 4 ply in Blue Raspberry approx. 200 metres (220 yards)
CC1 – Schoppel-Wolle Zauberball in Fuchsienbeet approx. 130 metres (142 yards)

Method: These stranded colorwork socks are knit in the round. They are worked from the cuff down with twisted cable ribbing, a round heel and a heel flap. The colorwork is charted to minimize pattern jog.
These socks can be knitted on dpns, by magic loop, or on a short circular (in which case you will still need dpns for the heel and toe decreases).

Size: This pattern is written in 4 sizes. All instructions that differ depending on the size you are knitting are indicated with parentheses and color coded like this: S (M, L, and XL).

Size Sock Circumference Approx. UK Sizes
S 7” 18 cm Children’s 13-4, Ladies 1-4
M 8” 20.5 cm Ladies 5-8
L 9” 23 cm Men’s 8.5-10.5
XL 10” 25.5cm Men’s 11-13

Yarn: You will need at least two contrasting colors of any 4 ply (fingering) sock yarn that you like and with which you can get tension/ gauge.

Please note I do not recommend using yarns with a high cotton content as cotton doesn’t stretch as much as other fibers and this will affect the fit of your socks.

The charted pattern in this sock works well with a solid and a long gradient yarn (as in the pair pictured), but don’t be afraid to experiment! I have found that the colorwork pattern doesn’t show up so well with highly variegated or yarns with very short color changes but solid colors or self striping yarns, mini skeins or leftovers could look great too, and you can easily add a third color for contrasting cuff, heels, and toes if you wish.

Be creative, have fun, but keep in mind changes will affect yardage and number of ends to weave in. The amounts of each color required will depend on how many colors you pick, where you choose to use them in the sock, and which size you are knitting. As a guide for the pair pictured (size M) I used the following:

MC – Schoppel Wolle Admiral in 6601 Martian Green approx. 240 metres (262 yards)
CC – Schoppel Wolle Zauberball in 2203 Oktoberfest approx. 130 metres (142 yards)
